CHAPTER 5
Outside of Ebony and Angeliqueâs West 118th Street apartment, the November sky was gray and cloudy. The rain made slanted streaks across the window. The two women sat on their living room couch. Ebony was knelt over with her feet propped on a small stool. She meticulously painted her toenails with a sparkling gold polish. Angelique sat on the other end of the couch with her laptop propped on her lap. She was busy doing market research for Mandingo Records.
Ebony looked over at her. âGirl, itâs Saturday! Why donât you give that a rest? You stayed up half the night working on it, and you havenât looked up from that screen in hours.â
âI have a deadline on Monday, andâ¦â
âWhat do you think Big Buck is doing right now? I bet you good money that heâs chillinâ.â
âThatâs why heâs paying me to worry for him. You know I left my job at QMI to do this. And Mona and I are in business now. We canât afford to work regular hours.â
âI respect what youâre saying and all, but there is such a thing called work-life balance.â
âAfter Mona and I get paid, Iâll be able to take a whole yearâs vacation.â
âSo where are we going?â Ebony smiled. âIâve always wanted to go to Saint-Tropez, mainly because of the name. Saint-Tropez, Saint-Tropez, Saint-Tropez, doesnât it just roll off of your tongue?â
Angelique smiled.
âBut seriously, you most definitely should take a long vacation after you finish up with Mandingo Records. And hopefully, it will be with a sexy ass man who treats you right and fucks you so good that your knees quiver.â
Angelique blushed and giggled. âI donât think Iâve ever been fucked that good.â
âGirl, you need to get with the program already.â
âYou know Iâm not going there until I fall in love, and the first step to falling in love is dating someone. Right now, Larry is the only prospect on the horizon. Heâs been blowing up my phone since that date we went on last month. I thought he would get the hint by now that Iâm not interested.â
âMen donât do well with hints; you have to be direct. You should just tell the man, âI donât want to go out with you again.â End of story.â
âI canât say that. Thatâs just cruel. The man just got divorced.â
âWell, heâs gonna keep calling until you set him straight.â
âYouâre probably right. I donât know. Thereâs a small part of me that... I guess Iâm not saying I like Larry, but I donât mind the attention. He even sends me these cute email greeting cards every week. If I tell him to leave me alone, then I wonât have anyoneâ¦â
âAre you attracted to Larry?â
âNot really.â
âSo why are you wasting the manâs time?â
Angelique glanced at her smart phone ringing on the coffee table. âGrandmaâ lit up the screen of her cell phone. âGirl, hold that thought. Let me get this.â She answered the call. âHey, Grandma.â
âHey, sweetie.â Grandmaâs voice wasnât bubbly like usual.
âIs something wrong?â
âI donât
